Ever increasing numbers of people today seek more fulfilling holidays at more attractive rates. The days of booking holidays at a local travel agent and disappearing on a package tour are dwindling, as vacationers turn to the internet to seek alternatives, and to research their destinations more precisely.

Whilst sales distribution methods are changing, so too are the products offered to holiday makers. The anodyne hotel is being seen as less and less attractive in comparison with more individual offerings: rather than wishing to be identified by name in a hotel, experienced travelers wish to be the only guest at a property. Renting a private house, or even home-swapping across the globe, is becoming more and more common as visitors seek authenticity, privacy, independence, and originality whilst on holiday. And if such a stay also offers the possibility of direct interaction with the locals and costs less than a hotel stay, the attractions are manifold.

Some countries have cottoned on to this evolution in travel more quickly than others. In Indonesia for example, private villas have long been offered for weekly rent in Bali, and other destinations such as the Caribbean have also proposed private villa rentals for many years. However, private villa rentals in these destinations have often been considered the sole domain of the super rich.

In Thailand though, whilst the evolution has been slow, more and more properties are now available for direct rent from their owners on a daily or weekly basis. Thailands real estate boom has helped develop the number of villas and holiday homes available. It is in general a pity that these properties still tend to be huddled together in the mass tourism markets of Pattaya, Phuket, and Koh Samui, which somewhat defeats the original attractions of an independent holiday home.

However, looking more closely, it is not difficult to narrow down ones search and to locate private properties for rent at highly attractive rates in original destinations. And in accordance with the Thais?legendary hospitality, these villas are even occasionally rented out more as if friends ?rather than paying guests - were being accommodated: meals are cooked for you, transport arranged, and invitations made to local ceremonies or festivals. In short, the Thais have realized that, whilst some guests may prefer privacy, others seek a genuine interaction at the local level with the countrys inhabitants, as they seek a memorable local experience instead of a manufactured stay.

Our exploration of Thailands holiday home rentals led us to several very different properties, and clearly, whilst the supply is not huge, the attractions of these homes, the hospitality of the Thais, the zing of the delicious food and the promise of sun all make these properties a marvelous holiday alternative. Below, you will find our tips for successful holiday home stays in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Gecko Villa We particularly enjoyed our stay at the bizarrely named Gecko Villa? From the outset, their comprehensive website ( Gecko Villa ) gave full details of the property, with numerous photographs and an online availability checker. Our email reservation was responded to rapidly, and helpful suggestions made about getting to the destination.

Upon arrival we were met at the airport by the smiling owners and driven to the large house that was set in the middle of emerald rice paddies, sugar cane plantations and woodlands. The property was set on extensive grounds guaranteeing privacy by our own pool, and the bedrooms and facilities all lived up to or surpassed what we had seen described on the internet. The kitchen showed up our own kitchen at home, and the shower garden in the master bedroom was a delightful touch.

When we said we loved Thai food, we were delighted to be taken off around the grounds to pick our own herbs and spices ?including strange plants that we had never considered using in the pot ?before being shown how to make genuine Thai and Northeaster dishes. The owners seemed genuinely pleased to be able to impart their knowledge and love of food ?and we were equally happy to have this cooking lesson provided at no cost!

The property was fully serviced and the rate we paid covered all our meals and even generous quantities of cool beer and fresh fruit juices. And as we were there in the mango season, we were encouraged to simply help ourselves to the fresh fruit straight from the trees?/p>

It was rare to find a house deep in the Thai countryside, and truly off the beaten tourist track, that offered every comfort for a relaxing stay in the real Thailand. The Visitors?Book was full of glowing comments and the many repeat guests bore testimony to the visitors?enjoyment of their stays, not only because of the property itself but because of the genuine welcome they received.

Villa Rental Sites Finding a suitable holiday home on the web is a relatively easy process via Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Bear the following in mind:

?Try to book directly with the property site. Searches tend to list global villa rental sites that generally take a commission on your stay, making it more expensive, and in some cases try to prevent you from contacting the owners directly.

?Look for an individual property rather than a house in a villa development. The latter are often managed by hotel groups and simply glorified hotel rooms ?at hotel rates!

?Travel in the off season, but book early. Better rates can generally be found for travel out of the tourist seasons, but do make sure you book ahead, as when a standalone villa is booked, it is booked!

?Make sure the property you choose has a telephone and address listed.

?Travel somewhere new! Much of the fun of your own holiday house is the way it can take you out of the tourist centres to enjoy a more authentic holiday.

Nokia N95 Tips and Tricks

This tips and tricks section will be split into two halves; 1. Improving battery life, as anyone who owns a N95 will know the battery drains pretty quickly. 2. Other tips and tricks that might be useful.

Maximising the Nokia N95 Battery Life.

Now when you first get a Nokia N95 out the box, charge it up, then begin to play with it you notice that after about an hour of play the battery indicator begins to disappear fairly quickly. This seemed strange to me as my previous phone was a Nokia N73 and the battery lasted for absolutely ages, granted there are some features on the N95 that aren't present on the N73 such as the Wi-Fi and GPS functionality but not enough to warrant such a big battery drain. After much playing around with the phones settings etc I have managed to get my N95's battery life close to or if not on par with my old N73, nevertheless much improved over the battery life when using the N95 straight out of the box.

Cycle the Battery

The first thing to do to improve the battery life, and the one which I found gave the best battery gain, is to give the battery one complete charge/discharge cycle. When first taking the phone out of the box allow the battery to charge completely before unplugging it from the power adapter. Then do everything you can to drain the battery, turn on the Bluetooth, turn on the Wi-Fi, play music, whatever it takes to drain the battery. Your goal is to drain the battery to the point where it shuts itself off, even when it shuts itself off try and turn it on again and keep draining the battery. Keep doing this till the phone will no longer boot. When this happens take the battery out and wait a few seconds. Replace the battery and attempt to turn it on again, if it turns on then use it till the phone shuts off again. Now place the N95 back on charge and leave until the charging cycle is complete. When using the Nokia N95 now it will seem to last a lot longer on battery before you get warning messages of low battery. I have a theory about how this process seems to increase battery life which may be entirely inaccurate, if so and you know why this has this effect then please share your views via the forum. I believe that this process does not change the battery in any way, rather it serves as a method in which to calibrate the N95 as to how long it can operate with the voltage that remains. Without putting the phone through a complete charge/discharge cycle the N95 has no choice but to refer to its default threshold which may have been set slightly higher when manufactured.

Turn off your Bluetooth.

The next thing to do to increase battery life is to switch the Bluetooth function to off when not in use. This may sound silly but a lot of people forget that their Bluetooth is on throughout the day, this wastes battery power and could also leave you open to an attack on your phone via Bluetooth if left switched on.

Switch off Wi-Fi Scanning.

Wi-Fi much like Bluetooth wastes battery power when in idle use. Make sure you turn this function off when not using it. This then also protects your phone from an attack via Wi-Fi.

Turn off 3G scanning if you don't use 3G.

Your Nokia N95 by default is set to periodically search for a 3G signal which also contributes to the depletion of the battery, if you don't use 3G then you can turn 3G scanning off by going to; menu, tools, settings, phone, network - change the network mode setting to 'GSM'.

The three factors above will greatly increase your battery life, if you wanted to increase the battery life still further than you can perform these tasks as follows;

Adjust the Screen Brightness.

The fact that the screen on your N95 lights up means that it's wasting energy, You can minimise the waste by turning down the brightness. Go to; menu, tools, settings, general, personalisation, display - change the light sensor from the default position to 'minimum'.

Adjust the Light Time-Out.

The less time that your screen is lit up for, the more energy you're going to save.

You can adjust the light time-out by going to; menu, tools, settings, general, personalisation, display - change the light time-out accordingly.

Power Saver Time-Out.

You can also adjust the length of time that the phone waits before going into power save mode. Obviously the sooner the Nokia N95 goes into power save mode, the more battery power you're going to save.

Go to; menu, tools, settings, general, personalisation, display - reduce the power saver time-out option from 60 seconds to say 30 seconds.

Other Tips and Tricks

Switching Between Silent and General.

Did you know that there was a quick way to switch between the 'General' profile and the 'Silent' profile on the Nokia N95? With the keypad open just press and hold the '#' key.

Reducing the Time Between Image Captures.

Does it frustrate you that when you want to take photos in fairly quick succession you have to wait for the N95 to display the previously captured image before it will let you progress? Did you know that you can turn this feature off. When in the camera mode press options, settings - change the show captured image option to 'off'. The time between image captures is greatly reduced.

Go straight to Your Music.

If you press and then keep hold of the multimedia key it will cause you to go straight to your music player.

Is Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) A Good Choice For Business Bandwidth?

For those outside looking in....it appears that the "Broadband Nation" in the business world is going a bit crazy over Gigabit Ethernet of all capacities. Careful....there's more to the story than meets the eye (or bandwidth meter.... 'wink').

You can sum it up as such....more often than not users, both inexperienced and power users, seem to be under the impression that bandwidth is related to end to end speed with any data. Where in fact that is only one half of the equation. You must look at the actual data volumes being sent as well....to determine if there are any concerns, bottlenecks or other performance issues.

Now take a step back and really look closely at your usage. For example, you've probably been asked many times to verify if the links were saturated for various servers, ie mail servers hosting hundreds of mailboxes.

One would expect that it be very busy all the time, where actually most baselines will show hardly ever moving past a light 25% or in that case 25Mbits/sec (100Mbps link) and for the record, that is most often combined both directions on a Full Duplex link.

The moral of the story is not needing or even wanting 1000Mbits/sec or even 10000Mbits/sec. It is if the need or want is 101Mbits/sec (in whole numbers here for argument sakes) that warrants the next level throughput and or 1001Mbits/sec to quantify considerations for the big 10000Mbits/sec.

The price per port now for gigabit ethernet surely warrants no need to forcibly stay away. However careful planning will continue to ensure reusing the ever increasing copper infrastructures and save on the now outdated need of fibre-for-gig (in many cases) that not so many years ago were not heard of by most. Now you can get a gig switch from LinkSys or D-Link for several pennies. The bang for the buck is at a great price point. Costs elsewhere in high end components offer other values not really important at this time, but more for good reason.

I'd suggest first baby steps while looking at 100Mbits/sec infrastructures and how to perhaps add bandwidth by teaming, or aggregating connections like Fast EtherChannel or Switch Assisted Load Balancing (example terms used by Cisco and HP respectively). This to create simple increments by adding network cards/ports one at a time often reaching near gigabit speeds without having to replace the switching component devices. This approach may be more cost effective and a tried and true technology seldom used. However it still offers even more than just speed such as redundancy. Of course these aggregating techniques have evolved also into the gigabit market. But generally they hold value in the super high end of volume throughput requirements..... and both typically not used at the access layer (aka desktop layer).

Some years ago, Cisco introduced the 40xx series switches. The first model had several slots, each of which had 6 gigabits of throughput. Two cards could plug into this slot. One had six 1 gigabit slot, intended primarily for interswitch trunking. The other had eighteen 1 gigabit slots, which, at first glance, would seem a bad idea.

The rationale for the 18 port card, however, was that typical Windows servers of the time, with typical processors, could only drive 300 Mbps or so of throughput. There was a net benefit to plugging such a server into a gigabit port, because the individual bits would clock in and out in one nanosecond, rather than 10 nanoseconds on a Fast Ethernet interface. Without going into a lot of queueing theory, this is, statistically, a good thing.

Using parallel 100 Mbps cards still holds down the bit transfer rate, but also adds a nontrivial cost of additional cables and physical ports.

Traffic statistics can be misleading, if you look only at the average transfer rate and conclude the link is little utilized. Especially if you are dealing with delay-sensitive applications such as VoIP, you need to consider the peak, not average utilization, because it is at a peak when you are most likely to encounter delay. For routine transaction processing, average load may be good enough, but not for audio and video, where the effect of delay is cumulative.

Now I'm a big fan of Gigabit Ethernet. But the driver is QoS in a very broad sense, not just traditional traffic analysis but more closely related to how video/multimedia can be supported for globally connected hosts connecting to server clusters.

Examine the existing teletraffic distribution in most enterprises and most do not need big GE, but a few already do and some really dynamic organisations will be shouting yes please.

If we change the perspective, there are genuinely organisations out there who will want to offer those services that could not previously be offered by virtue of the LAN bottleneck or resource exhaustion at the server cluster.

Just remember that it doesn't provide a universal best fit for all enterprises and users.

The pricing for Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure is a major factor in implementing it in any organization. While more and more server vendors are equipping their servers with 10/100/1000 NICs (powered by Intel and Broadcom chipsets), the network side of the house (if not purchased/installed in the last 2-3 years) are still most likely 10/100Mbps.

It makes sense to require all new servers to be 1000Mbps capable, but on the switch side of things: if there isn't a widespread need for 1000Mbps, don't retrofit your entire architecture with it. Do a blade or two on your core switches, and a smaller distribution switch or two for the few aggregation points that do need it.

As the price per port comes down for GigE, cash in on vendor trade-ins to upgrade your equipment. Additionally, watch your bandwidth. There's always been a historical trend where whenever there's additional capacity people get really lax on the management of resources.

640K used to be a memory barrier, forcing people to be efficient with their code, now you have gigs upon gigs where people get sloppy with their code, database indexes, etc. and end up requiring more memory. The same goes for network traffic. But, I am not advocating that you're stingy with your bits, just sensible.

Now, 10GE is a different story, and I can only currently see a need for it in linking campuses and buildings with a significant amount of high-bandwidth users. The price of a single 10GE XENPAK is 2-3 distribution switches, or even a bandwidth shaping device.

The final practical message.....choose carefully.

And how did I come to value this story at $200,000. Well to take out a full-page advertisement in the Star newspaper would cost $50,000. But editorial coverage is four times more credible than an advertisement and you need to multiply the advertising cost by a factor of four.

Those with long enough memories will remember the first wave of dot.com mania in the 1990s, which led to a host of web businesses being valued at multi-millions of pounds by the stock market, despite never having generated any meaningful revenue. Many of those over-valued companies subsequently failed to make the predicted profits and disappeared without trace, incurring huge losses and leaving a lot of investors with burnt fingers.

One of the prime reasons for the failure of those early online businesses wasn't because their ideas or business models were outlandish it was because they relied upon 26kbps dial-up to deliver their website to the consumer. That proved to be far too slow as many website pages took far too long to download, provoking widespread disillusionment amongst web-users. As a result many turned their back on cyberspace, companies failed in their thousands, and the early optimism of internet entrepreneurs dissolved.

It has taken the widespread introduction of broadband access to the internet to reverse dot.com fortunes. Now, with download speeds of upwards of 8meg widely available the nightmares of the past have been largely forgotten and the internet business world is now experiencing rapid growth as people return to the web in their millions. In 2005 the UK passed the US in terms of per capita penetration of Broadband services, and now 89% of web users in the UK are broadband users, according to BRMB internet monitor.

Increased fierce competition has seen the price of broadband pushed down at the same time as download speeds have dramatically increased. That has enabled a communications revolution, as broad bandwidth allows users to make voice and video calls via their PCs far cheaper than using a traditional land-line.

The minimum recommended bandwidth for smooth video chat is 128kb for both upload and download speeds, but double that is much better. At a dial-up speed of 56kb video calling is just not possible, and even voice-only calls will be pretty poor. Now that almost nine in ten web users in the UK are on broadband at speeds in excess of those minimum speeds they can all take advantage of free voice and video calls on the web.

But it's just not increased bandwidth that has made quality video communications possible on the web. Rapidly improving technology has led to a dramatic increase in webcam quality meaning that they are no longer the preserve of the well-to-do; for example, a professional quality webcam can now be bought for under 100.

ADSL is a kind of broadband Internet connection that you can get over your existing phone line. When people hear about this, they often wonder how on earth it can be true. Doesnt the phone line need to be upgraded? How can all that extra data fit through an ordinary phone line? Why werent they doing this years ago, when I was still dialling up with my old modem? To understand the answers to these questions, its necessary to learn a little about how ADSL works.

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The asymmetric?part simply means that you can download over the line faster than you can upload ?good for home users, who generally download (get things from the Internet) far more than they upload (send things to it).

Its the digital?part that is important, however. If you think back to old dial-up modems, remember the screeching noises they made when they were connecting? Thats because they were encoding the data they sent over the phone line as sound ?all those ones and zeros were becoming a series of sounds. It was an analogue to digital to analogue conversion at each end, and was wildly inefficient.

What DSL does is use the unused frequencies of the phone line (that is, the parts that arent needed for voice signals) to carry digital signals, in the form of electrical pulses instead of sound ?its a successor to ISDN, the expensive business precursor of the technology. This method is much, much faster than the old analogue way. The unused part of the line isnt that big, but DSL splits it up into many smaller pieces and uses each one separately, allowing multiple channels?of data to be sent and received at once.

Antique postcards have gained popularity in the past few years because those kinds of messages and layouts have almost disappeared. Antique postcards need to be preserved in such a way to reduce damage caused by the environment and handling. It should be ensured that no damaging chemicals come in contact to the documents being stored.

Collectors should ensure that the openings of albums and holders are larger in size than the postcards. Otherwise, postcards might get damaged or get a crease, or their corners might bend while being inserted or removed from the album pages. Album pages and the holders should be stiff enough to protect the collection from any kind of mishandling. Postcards might get damaged if chemicals used to manufacture plastic and paper react with antique cards. Most plastics used to manufacture these albums and holders have certain additives that make them softer and pliable. Eventually these additives may break down from the plastic and form acidic oil.

Damage might show itself in the form of lifting of inks causing discoloration of cards and deterioration of postcard paper. The effect of acid may continue even after the antique postcard is taken out of the folder or album. Plastics and papers that are free from these compounds are made from triacetate, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene or unplasticized polyvinylchloride. As none of the plastics are truly time-tested, in spite of the claims made by the manufacturers, it is recommended that the material used for archival storage should be replaced once or twice every 50 years. Acid from paper used for storage supplies can also cause discoloration or deterioration of cards. Both types of damage are permanent.

It is also recommended to keep a watch on the climate or temperature under which cards are stored. Excessive heat and humidity can speed up the process of deterioration. The collection should be stored in cool and dry places only.

I found a Directors Cut Tin of a Japanese movie I liked a few years back (and owned a regular copy of) that I picked up from a local video store in a box and sold it for $75. Its kind of rare apparently. But the key is that I only paid $10 for it, havent watched it in 3 years and forgot I owned it. Im not building a collection. So sell it off, and pay for food for another week.

Of course, as my friends keep reminding me, dont over do it (and I dont; its too much damn work and way too time consuming to over do it) or youll start regretting what you sell. Unless you were unemployed against your will, you should only sell that which you no longer need or want. Recent years have seen an increase in the amount of games released with family interaction in mind, with the most popular being the Buzz!, SingStar and Guitar Hero series of videogames, all available for the PlayStation 2.

Guitar Hero allows players to play along to their favourite rock songs on a special guitar-shaped controller. In the game, an extended guitar neck is shown on-screen, and as the song progresses, coloured markers indicating notes scroll down the screen in time with the music. The player has to push the corresponding buttons on the guitar controller in order to gain points, and the game supports both cooperative and competitive modes, allowing two people to play simultaneously. The songs included in the games cover a variety of genres, from easier numbers, like Smoke on the Water?by Deep Purple, to the ridiculously hard, such as Free Bird?by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The latest instalment, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock will be released later next month.

I recently "sold out" and bought myself an iPod. Here's a pro's guide to hooking it up to your head unit!

But first...

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past few years, you have heard of the iPod; Apple's wonderfully designed portable music player. The iPod allows you to carry the music of hundreds or thousands of CDs in a small box that fits easily in your pocket or bag. It is capable of much more, but the focus of this article is on the music. Because of the extreme portability of the iPod, many people want to bring it with them in the car. This is a problem because most cars don't offer iPod connectivity, with few exceptions. Fortunately, there are solutions for people who want to use their iPod in the car.

Direct connection:

Pros: Control iPod with stereo and remote controls, automatically charges iPod, perfect sound quality, easy to install, cheap Cons: None that I know of!

This option is only available to owners of radios that support a direct connection to the iPod. Basically, all you need is a cable that connects to your iPod, then to the radio. Alpine is one brand I know that offers this feature. Some new vehicles also offer a direct connection to the iPod.

How to connect via an interface:

Pros: Control iPod with stereo and remote controls, automatically charges iPod, perfect sound quality Cons: Expensive, more complicated to install

This option is available to owners of more up-to-date aftermarket radios and some newer factory radios.

Aftermarket radios:

You'll need a brand specific ipod interface. For example, if you have an Alpine head unit, you'll need to get an Alpine ipod interface. Usually, this interface is a small box that has an output to your radio, and an input that connects to to your ipod. Basically, you'll need to find an appropriate mounting location for the box. From there, find a good place to route the ipod cable. Some good locations are inside the glove box, or if you have a pocket in your dash, route it through there.

Factory radios:

You'll need a vehicle specific ipod interface. The one company I know of that manufactures these interfaces is Peripheral. Check out their website to see if your vehicle is supported. If yes, you're set! Hook up the interface similar to how you would above.

How to connect via a phono to RCA cable.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, easy installation, super cheap Cons: Can't control ipod with stereo, ipod won't automatically charge

You will need a head unit that has an auxillary input for this to work. If your head unit does not have an aux in, you're probably better off looking for another alternative.

How to connect an iPod through FM modulation:

Pros: Very easy to setup and install, device is widely available, most devices charge the iPod Cons: Not the cheapest, poorer sound quality, ipod can't be controlled by radio

This is the easiest way to hook up an iPod to your radio. Basically, your ipod connects to a device that broadcasts the music to a radio station frequency. Tune your radio to that frequency, and your music will play through the radio. There are a variety of products available that do this.

The DoTs recent decision effectively excluding ISP bids for WiMax spectrum resurrects memories of Indias past flights of fantasy. The fantasy this time around is the cellular operators commitment to nationally deploy 2.5 GHz spectrum for wireless broadband on WiMax and not hoard it or sneak it for 3G use should ?if the DoT has its way - they be given both.

This is yet another kick-in-the-teeth for Indian ISPs as the nation still has a chastity belt around VoIP disallowing interconnection with the public fixed and mobile telephone networks. Now the punch-drunk Internet providers are barricaded from WiMax in what can only be a total flight from logic.

If the DoT really wants to have an actual, functional, no nonsense ubiquitous mobile truly "wireless broadband" service that allows the country to somewhat retain burnish on the India Shining?plaque at the door, then the guy to deliver it is the one with no vested interest in legacy air interfaces engendering mobility.

Meaning, keep the cellular establishment away from WiMax because theyll do everything with it but provide a no-nonsense ubiquitous mobile truly wireless broadband service that cannibalizes existing revenues and kills those hot 3G dreams.

In fairness our incumbent and cellular friends (same difference) would use WiMax for backhaul, meaning its a great way to connect base stations back to the mother ship while customers continue connecting to these base stations over existing cellular air interface investments. Theyd also use WiMax to provide fixed wireless local loops (WLL) into homes in another area they consider relatively unexciting compared to cellulars mother lode. Remember how Reliance sneaked cellular to the public in the guise of WLL? It was cellular mobility Reliance coveted not boring old fixed wireless local loops. And its WiMaxs vaunted mobility the cellular establishment wants to keep out of ISP reach and away from the user.

Keeping it real Id probably do the same in cellular shoes. The Internet is synonymous with freebies, long distance and fixed line voice revenues are going that way too with the only telecom real estate left making money being inside the cell phone. You put a WiMax broadband eight-lane highway into the cell phone and there goes that walled garden.

No one asks the cellular establishment be denied spectrum for wireless broadband. Let them keep their existing chunks of 3.5 GHz admirably suited for WLL but dont waste 2.5 GHz or 2.3 Ghz which god gave to engender mobility over wireless broadband footprints. Assign that mission to the ISPs.

Globally, the cellular establishment goes to incredible lengths to protect legacy investment and eschew air interfaces that lend themselves more naturally to Internet access. No reason to think their Indian chapter will do anything other than prevaricate thus until legacy costs are fully amortized and beyond. Consumers are to pay for cellular airtime until the establishments books cease demanding tithe. Until that happens, no video, YouTube or VoIP access is going to be efficiently allowed on to your mobile phone.

3G is the cellular establishments answer to broadband and they've already spent US$150Billion globally on licenses and similar change on deployment. Why would the Indian cellular establishment go with anything else? More so because tried and tested equipment is available today to make 2G & 3G networks appear seamless. WiMax is a totally different technology and while roaming is possible, it calls for a completely different outlook to providing what is essentially a very data centric service - somthing the cellular operator is not comfortable with as yet, unlike the ISP for whom it is his very bread & butter. Just a look at the imprecations cast at WiMax mobility by the august cellular lobby suggests their love for any technology other than 3G may not be all encompassing.

Ergo, any spectrum available for true wireless broadband over 2.5 GHz or 700 MHz is least likely to be used by the cellular establishment to speedily engender mobile access over non-cellular technologies like WiMax. The sensible way forward would be to have the cellular operator focus on proper 3G deployment while the larger ISPs are madated to deliver on national WiMax.

The DoT of course doesnt see it this way and humors a lobby whose massive investment in legacy networks ensures theyll continue buck trends positing that not only are more and more Indians going to spend more and more time on the Internet but well do it over fatter bandwidth and wireless connectivity.

Doing the math, fatter bandwidth translates into at least 3 to 5 Mbits/second of ubiquitous wireless broadband speeds to the mobile handset if we are to go beyond SMS messaging or Blackberry and into the realm of true mobile internet access to our mail servers, to YouTube, Videoblogs, interactive gaming, and movies.

Given that the fastest cellular 3G speeds available to a cell phone today and forever are around 500 to 700 very expensive kbits/sec means we have a situation.

Almost everyone I see on the street in Indian metros flaunts state-of-the-art cell phones and so I suspect therere enough such phones around to make my argument. Which is, when was the last time you used this WiFi capability? Its a safe bet the wireless broadband highway into your mobile phone lies unused while you pay the cellular provider to check email over Blackberry and to download music files. As far as easy online access to YouTube or interactive TV & gaming go, forget about it because 3G or no 3G, cellular technology has no answers. The cellular establishment has circumscribed the user and were all culpable for allowing this to happen.

The reason you dont use the mobile phones WiFi feature is because it is intentionally unfriendly but mainly because you are hooked to the cellular service due to its billion dollar mobility feature and thats where you and your phone lock-on automatically. If ubiquitous mobile true wireless broadband did happen, youd happily use it instead of buying expensive airtime on souped-up cellular air interfaces poorly suited for data downloads and youd stop thumbing away on band-aids like Blackberry.

Why is all this so important to a still largely poor country like India? Because India today is in the same ballpark as China when it comes to Internet use. Thats the good news. The sad part is that most Indians still use dial-up and we arent close to even being close to China in broadband penetration. Given a proven penchant for mobility and video India however is fertile ground for massive growth in mobile broadband Internet access. The DoT decision favoring the camp opposing precisely this possibility does not help engender critical mass to complete with our giant friend hovering over the Himalayas. Todays defense is in economic growth which is where more chunks of 2.5 GHz spectrum needs deployment, not in the fastness of South Block.

Early this year the Malaysian Regulator MCMC disallowed Malaysias cellular establishment from bidding for wireless broadband. He had good reason for his ruling as the cellular operators has absolutely nothing to show on past wireless broadband commitments.

Belaboring further, Google eyeballed the American cellular mastodon on behalf of ISPs in the current run up to the 2008 FCC auction for nation-wide chunks of 700 MHz. Early August this year the FCC Chairman announced ground rules for the slugfest and while not totally granting Googles petition enough was ceded to ensure a third pipe?allowing ISPs a fighting chance to offer ubiquitous, true wireless broadband mobility in the face of a recalcitrant cellular lobby. Here's the point. In America the arguments have advanced to whether a spectrum owner - Telco or ISP, doesn't matter - should have to allow any and all devices to connect unencumbered and whether the owner should be forced to offer wholesale spectrum to other providers. To the cellular estabishments chagrin the FCC is also working with wireless broadband proponents to test devices that would access white (meaning unused) space in TV Broadcast spectrum. Rather than engage the Industry at such sophisticated levels DoT forces Indian ISPs to waste time fighting just to be allowed into the auction room.

what we see is that while regulators elsewhere have cause to suspect the cellular establishments bona fides the DoT appears starry eyed in faith and touchingly monogamous in intent.

The DoT may not realize (who am I kidding?) but their decision helps ensure a new much-needed technology doesnt come in the way of the cellular establishment milking their incumbent networks into near perpetuity.

The preponderance of advantage enjoyed by incumbents means a regulator or deciding body like the DoT fails even if it simply remains scrupulously neutral. Be it the EU, North America, Australia, Malaysia or India for that matter in the past, we see definitive change only happen through rulings that give a real edge to newcomers and ISPs. In fairness, the TRAIs forward thinking on regulatory matters is only matched by an inability to stand up to the DoT. So the ball being in DoTs court when one sees it fail even at neutrality to the extent of openly favoring incumbents, attempted flippancy cant really hide the distaste.

Should however the DoT choose to listen, radical departure from legacy may work wonders for users as well as the industry. That includes the cellular establishment whose own long term interests are ill-served by their present approach. Inviting the ISPs to bid as equals benefits all. One can only hope the DoT does what is best for the Indian consumer and for this wonderful technology that allows us so much magic over the ether.

What Is The Ideal Bandwidth Solution For Critical Business Applications?

When deciding on a bandwidth solution for your business's computer network architecture there are many options to choose from .... and even more factors to consider in the process. Be sure to assess both business and technology implications to arrive at the best choice.

First, the increased availability of metrics for SONET-based facilities through the use of APS and rings (folded on traditional such as BLSR) should be considered. A well designed SONET - based interconnect or network can achieve 99.999% availability. This is something typical electronic interfaces would be hard pressed to do without gobs of additional complexity and layers.

Next concatenated STS-1 provide great flexibility to data-enabled equipment, permitting network operators to run larger and larger virtual pipes into their gear. In a data-centric world such as POE, MPLS and ATM .... this is invaluable. Replicating such flexibility with copper-based solutions is a kludge, not plausible, or a near impossibility.

Remember too that SONET-based solutions are pretty much limited to mostly North-American eye balls. If you were to open the scope to include SDH-based solutions, your addressable options now become global as far as installation locales.

Another factor for consideration is that SONET ADM and next generation multi-service switches permit an extraordinary amount of flexibility with regard to MUX/drop options, and have several OSI layers of ability and configuration within the single platform. This heavy reduces the amount of boxes required to complete the same functionality, as well as simplifies the overall network topology.

Lastly, the cost per usable Mbps payload drops considerably as you move up the bandwidth ladder. For example, the costs of a DS-1 worth of bandwidth plummets as you move from an OC-3, to OC-12, to an OC-48, etc.

But keep in mind that the geography where your business is located will yield different solutions. For example, you may be able to work on OC-3 Sonnet rings with dual entry points to your install Premise. This solution is far more bullit proof than any other solution because it is connected to multiple CO's .... and there is a backup ring that travels in an opposite direction from the primary ring. Plus the provider may well do the build out at no NRC to a bsuiness customer. Also, you may be able to bury the MRC so that the loop cost essentialy goes away. This type of buildout would normally cost between 350K and 475K through Qwest, Verizon or sprint .... and also have a similar MRC associated with it.

Now although the option of Metro Ethernet in this case is cheap bandwidth .... there is still a single point of failure with this product. Thus Metro E may not be the best choice if your applications can not tolerate single point failures.

This is an example of how every company will have slightly different needs .... and a solution at this level should be evaluated carefully.

Many suppliers will offer various options, but increasingly businesses are coming over to Ethernet based solutions. Smaller locations can be connected using 10 or 100 mbps Ethernet, often for the same price as SDSL. For a hub you want Gig-E or 10 Gig-E, and with the ability to provide point to multipoint or even meshed configurations. In this case Ethernet has much more flexibility than point to point circuits.

Ethernet can and does come in many different flavours. Over SDH or SONET you get guaranteed throughput ..... and either "all you can eat" bandwidth or upgradable in T1/E1 increments (depending on platform it can be even smaller increments).

Many platforms also allow flexible usage also. Pay for what you need only, but still be allowed to burst high for periods of time. This is very handy for backing up those application servers to a disaster recovery site overnight.

Ethernet is also available over SDH/SONET. So if a T1 or E1 is more cost effective, you still get the low cost of the Ethernet port to plug your equipment in. Naturally too Ethernet supports IP. So you can buy your Ethernet at Layer 2 or 3 - depending on your own organizations requirements for security, ease of management, and so forth.

Of course OCx and STM-y still have their place in the world. But with interfaces now going up towards 100 G for Metro and Long Haul .... Ethernet will continue to scale in speed and grow in popularity. The attractiveness once driven primarily by cost effectiveness is fast adding performance as a factor.

So there you have it. Your primary options for high demand critical business applications should be SONET based OCx solutions .... and Ethernet based solutions. Remember to weigh both your specific business and technology implications in your decision. Whatever direction you go in ..... do your homework and choose wisely.

Well, 2007 is in the books and now it's time to get ready for the new year. This article is going to share with you my advice for marketing in 2008. This is all based on my own personal experience that has allowed me to build a 6 figure income this past year. I have no doubt that these tips will greatly help you in working your way towards YOUR goals.

The first, and absolutely most important item for 2008 is to make a business plan for the year and a daily schedule. When you don't know what you're going to do on a daily basis, it makes it that much harder to get anything done. Trust me, I know. That's why I not only know what products I will be creating for 2008, but I also know what I will be doing every single day..almost to the hour. Yes, it takes a lot of discipline to be that organized, but trust me, if you can pull it off, you'll find your productivity increasing by at least 100%.

The next piece of advice I'm going to offer is to study constantly. Marketing methods are changing on a daily basis. Once upon a time, believe it or not, there were no blogs, no Squidoo, no web 2.0 and no Digg. The Internet changes 10 times faster than the offline world. Those who don't keep up end up falling behind the rest of the pack. It's not fair, but it's the way it is. Technology is also changing constantly. Tasks that used to take hours to do can now be done in minutes.

The final piece of advice I am going to leave you with is to set goals. You can't imagine how much easier it is to see progress in your business when you set goals for yourself. At the start, set them low. When I first started marketing online, my first goal was to make $1,000 a month. It was a modest goal but I knew it was one I could reach fairly easily. Once I did, my next goal was $2,000 and so on. Today, I am earning over five figures monthly. It takes time, but eventually you will see progress if you keep working at it on a daily basis.

A recent survey - carried out by a popular broadband advice site - focused on what consumers may want from a next-generation broadband connection. The results showed that net users identified the ability to download high-quality films as quickly as possible as the service that they want most out of next-generation services.

Over 61% of those surveyed rated downloading DVD-quality films as the service that would be considered the most interesting when it came to next-generation broadband. Some 18% of users said they downloaded films, although it was the area of online activity that had the least time dedicated to it.

Of those questioned in the survey, a number of services that would be welcomed as a result of next-generation broadband were identified as a result, including:

Downloading DVD-quality films in 5 minutes

Downloading HDTV programmes on demand

Video conferencing with friends and family using VoIP software

Home surveillance via broadband

High definition gaming services

The survey comes about at a time when the future in the UK is still very much under discussion, with a summit on the subject taking place recently to discuss the issues of getting the UK broadband up to speed with the rest of the world.

In countries like South Korea, around 90% of homes can get cheap connections between 50 and 100Mbps, with online gaming providing one of the biggest drives for such a service. It is unlikely that gaming could drive the UK broadband market, although the services identified in the survey could help drive the demand for faster connection.

Unusually, the applications that attracted the most interest in the idea of next-generation broadband were also identified as those that had the least online time spent on them. It is hoped that the demand for high-definition television and video will drive services in the UK market, helping to justify the need to upgrade existing networks and install new fibre networks - capable of delivering speeds of up to 100Mbps.

There is uncertainty, however, as to the cost of rolling out such a service, along with the issue of pricing - with 60% responding either 'no' or 'don't know' when asked about paying for such services.

You know what it's like, another day, another commute to work, another set of roadworks somewhere along the way. Chances are they're probably working on the telecoms cables beneath the surface.

However, the idea of running a fibre-optic network beneath the surface could soon come into practice.

Fibre-optic cables transmit data using light pulses down glass or plastic fibres - which are not prone to outside interference, and could therefore help deliver ultra-fast broadband across the UK.

Such cabling networks are already being implemented in Japan, but also in some cities - such as Paris - making use of vast sewer systems in order to deliver high-speed broadband connections through fibre-optic cabling to homes and businesses.

With a sewer network of over 360,000 miles existing in the UK, the idea of threading cables through underground pipes in order to help deliver high-speed broadband services may sound far-fetched, but it could soon become a reality.

A networking firm in Wales are currently in talks with several councils about the possibility of laying fibre-optic cables - which could potentially lead to faster broadband services becoming available, whilst eliminating the need to spend time and money digging up the roads.

Universities in Aberdeen, Bournemouth and Bath have been used to trial such methods of cabling on a small scale. However the firm have been negotiating with councils and water boards to try and strike a deal which could see fibre-optic cabling being laid over wider areas.

Cables would lie up to five metres below the surface, and as fibre optic cabling is believed to be less prone to erosion and rust, it could prove to be the next phase in delivering ultra-fast broadband connections across the UK.

What is a T1?

A T1 is a high-speed digital circuit that can be used for voice, data or both. The T1 transmits at a high speed, up to 1.544 Mbps, which is faster than many modems. The T1 consists of 24 channels and is typically used for businesses. The circuit is delivered on fiber but can sometimes come to the premise on copper wires. It is engineered to provide the proper speed and performance based on your location and proximity to the nearest telephone central office.

How does a T1 work?

A T1 is an engineered circuit that is connected specifically for your company location. It uses 3 pair of fiber for connection. The circuit comes into your premise and is terminated onto a smart jack. From there it can be extended into your telephone system.

While DSL connections were considered the standard connection in the 1990's, the T1 is a more reliable and faster connection, which is becoming the modern standard for businesses in the 21st century.

A T1 is an affordable solution for most small to mid-sized businesses. There are one-time installation costs to consider, however, these costs are easily made up in the substantial cost savings that you will get during the first year in service. There are many T1 providers to choose from. Some areas require the use of a CSU (customer service unit) with the T1. This provides a test point, which can be used to fix any problems if they occur.

Is a T1 reliable?

Unlike other forms of DSL, ADSL has an asymmetric high-speed data flow, meaning that it can process data flow at high speeds in only one direction. Technical Statistics

While a conventional dial-up modem can only download up to 56 kbps per second, the ADSL modem can download at the rate of 256 kbps and can typically go as fast as eight mbps.
